Bio

In a world of predictable leading men, Johnny Depp has always been the glorious exception. Born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Depp never set out to be a movie star. He dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue a career in music, playing in various garage bands before a chance introduction to actor Nicolas Cage led to his film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). But it was his role as the brooding, undercover detective in the television series 21 Jump Street that first brought him fame—though he quickly grew tired of being labeled a teen heartthrob and fought to break free from the mold.

Depp's rebellion against convention became his superpower. Teaming up with director Tim Burton, he created some of the most unforgettable characters in modern cinema from the tender, scissor-handed Edward Scissorhands to the whimsical Willy Wonka and the macabre Sweeney Todd. His portrayal of the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise catapulted him to global superstardom, earning him an Academy Award nomination and cementing his status as one of the most original actors of his generation. Beyond the screen, Depp is a passionate musician, performing with his band Hollywood Vampires, and a dedicated philanthropist. His career—marked by fearless choices and an unapologetic embrace of the weird and wonderful—has made him a cultural icon, beloved by audiences around the world.
